CIAN GENERATES YOUTH AWARENESS FOR ONLINE SECURITY

October 2, 2009 Peoria, IL- CIAN, Inc. is pleased to announce they will be introducing Peoria area students to a new community service initiative, the "Cyber Security Awareness Volunteer Education Project (C-SAVE)". The program taps the knowledge and enthusiasm of IT professionals, like those from CIAN, who want to give back to the community and educate young people to use the Internet safely and securely.

The National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) implemented the national volunteer project to bring cyber security, cyber safety, and cyber ethics education to schools around the country. CIAN will be volunteering their time to go into area primary and middle schools throughout the month of October in order to educate Peoria area youth on the importance of online safety.

"CIAN believes that as our use of the Internet grows we must be sure to give children the training they need to be safe and the skills they need to succeed. Their online activity can affect their well being as well as their family, friends, and neighbors." -Amber Smith, Business Development Coordinator, CIAN, Inc.

In the fall of 2008, The NCSA released a study of cyber security, cyber safety, and cyber ethics education in the United States. The study (can be found at www.safeonline.org) revealed that schools have a very low adoption rate of broad based curriculum in these topics and teachers do not feel prepared to teach these topics.

Study findings include:

  • Only 22% of teachers are comfortable teaching about cyber bullying, identity theft and other types of cyber crime.
  • Only 23% of teachers feel prepared to teach students how to protect their personal information online.
  • Topics such as cyber bullying, cyber stalking, harassment, identity theft, and criminal hackers are included in less than a third of curriculum nationwide.

The study results are not surprising since our digital culture is advancing more rapidly than schools, communities, and parents can adapt and find ways to educate young people on how to stay safe online. The good news is that CIAN and C-SAVE will help fill that gap by teaching the basic content of cyber security, cyber safety, and cyber ethics to Peoria area students.

Founded in 1990 by a retired Navy veteran, CIAN was originally established to install and maintain computer networks. Since 2001, CIAN (a local CISCO, Symantec, and Microsoft Certified Partner) has been specializing in securing customer information and responding to corporate concerns for safeguarding networked data.
