April 20, 2012 Peoria, IL – CIAN, Inc. is pleased to announce that renowned US security expert, Ray Semko, also known as the D*I*C*E* Man, is returning to Peoria May 11, 2012 and will speak from 2-4 at the Packard Plaza. Semko, a retired Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) counter intelligence agent began spreading the word world-wide in the form of security awareness training while still serving in his government position. Semko is known for his D*I*C*E* program that has been utilized by the government and private sector for over 20 years. D*I*C*E* stands for Defensive Information to Counter Everything.

Semko’s presentation explains the necessity and process of recognizing adversaries and targets, methods adversaries use, and countermeasures which can be taken. This informational seminar will help protect invaluable trade secrets, business plans, and even personal information.

CIAN is sponsoring this free opportunity for businesses, local law enforcement, local Department of Defense personnel, and the community to hear Semko speak as part of their goal to raise awareness of security and terrorism threats. Semko’s two hour presentation will cover current threats to America and to American companies, how to exist and grow in this world economy, the need to be more proactive in their own security programs, countermeasures that will help them survive and hopefully thrive as well as the importance of quick reporting of any potential problems to the proper authorities.

“Terrorism will never be eradicated but I am trying to minimize it by making everyday citizens aware that it exists,” Semko said. “The Peoria area in particular, located between two major cities, Chicago and St. Louis, provides an ideal location for terrorist activity and staging.”

“It is an honor for CIAN to bring someone of Ray’s caliber here to Peoria,” said Steve Hope, President and CEO of CIAN, Inc. “Our goal is to increase awareness among local government, businesses and private citizens and point out the options we have available to protect themselves, their businesses and our country. CIAN is offering this opportunity free of charge as our contribution to the safety and awareness of our local community.”

Those interested in hearing Semko’s presentation can call CIAN at (309) 691-3000 and ask for Christine Bare or register online.

About CIAN: CIAN was founded on the East Coast in 1990 by a retired Navy cryptologist. He has 40 years of intelligence and national security experience. The company was originally established to install and maintain computer networks, but quickly progressed to become a recognized leader in migrating important information from legacy software and equipment onto state-of-the-art high technology systems. CIAN is the only Peoria area provider focused exclusively on creating customized network appliances to address client security concerns, remotely monitoring, analyzing, and securing government and commercial networks and customer information. CIAN, a CISCO, Symantec, and Microsoft Gold Certified partner has had a Peoria location for over five years.

CIAN has won a multimillion dollar contract to implement and manage the Central Illinois Health Information Exchange, which will electronically connect the region’s hospitals, healthcare providers and other healthcare services organizations.

The five year contract calls for CIAN to develop the exchange using the SaaS (software-as-a-service) model in which the hardware, software and data center operations will be managed by CIAN. The company will also deploy analytics and management platforms to augment the core SaaS offering in conjunction with ICA Informatics and CIHIE member organizations.

The exchange is being developed for members of CIHIE regional consortium comprising of hospitals, healthcare providers, payers and other related parties. CIHIE will govern the exchange and plans to begin piloting the network in the first quarter of 2012.

“CIAN will provide consulting, design, implementation and the operational foundation for CIHIE here in Illinois,” reports Steve Hope, president of CIAN. “The project is a partnership between CIHIE, ICA Informatics of Nashville, Tennessee, and CIAN.”

CIHIE hopes to reduce duplication of tests and procedures, enhance prescribing capabilities and facilitate communication with groups that might not have the financial capability to deploy their own electronic healthcare record (EHR) system at their facility.

The providers involved in CIHIE initially include Advocate Bromenn Medical Center, Normal; Community Health Improvement Center, Decatur; Decatur Memorial Hospital, Decatur; Easter Seals of Peoria & Bloomington-Normal & Decatur; Heartland Community Health Clinic, Peoria; Human Services Center, Peoria; Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Peoria; Methodist Medical Center of Illinois, Peoria; OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, Peoria; Proctor Hospital, Peoria; St. Mary’s Hospital, Decatur; St. Mary’s Hospital, Streator; and the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria.

To contact CIAN, call (309) 691-3000.

CIAN is collecting used and new laptops for the troops and sending them to JDS Computers, a nonprofit that refurbish and send them to military units overseas. CIAN is also encourages those who don’t have a laptop to send monetary contributions to Any Soldier®.

As a service-disabled Navy veteran, Steve Hope, owner and CEO of CIAN, says that supporting the troops is a cause near and dear to him and his company.

“Our company’s heart is really with this cause,” Hope said. “A large percentage of the employees in our Peoria office are either former or current members of the military. We know how hard it is to be far away from family for long periods of time. Each laptop is given to a unit in a combat zone, so soldiers can keep in touch with loved ones and family at home.”

“As a team we are strongly committed to helping those who serve our country including active duty personnel, veterans and organizations such as Any Soldier® and JDS Computers, which assist current and former military members.”

Hope says as in the past, his company will also continue sponsoring the Peoria Chiefs’ “Salute to the USA” ball game each summer.

“We work with the Chiefs to provide tickets to the military and honor someone who has contributed to the support of our military. This past summer we honored Ron Ball, a readjustment counselor from the Veterans Administration for his work helping veterans get acclimated to civilian life.”

Hope says there is an opportunity for everyone to join together to help our troops whether or not they have a laptop to donate.

CIAN will be donating both new and used laptops and we will be asking those in the community, especially businesses and schools for their old equipment and any new laptops they wish to provide.

“Every bit helps. If someone has only $5 to donate, they can still help our troops through Any Soldier®,” Hope said. “While a few employees may have laptops to donate, at our office most will be making monetary donations and collecting spare change for Any Soldier. I’ve committed to match those donations.”

JDS, the nonprofit that refurbishes the laptops is run by a Vietnam veteran, Dr. Jim Payne, to get laptops to the troops. Payne says while his organization is a 501(c) (3) made up of volunteers, they do not take monetary donations and are strictly looking for laptops. Payne has personally spent $35,000 in shipping laptops overseas (including upgrades).

“Over the years hundreds of our laptops have been given to American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan,” said Payne.

Any Soldier®, along with the Veterans Administration, is used by Payne and his team to process the requests for equipment and make sure they are legitimate. Retired Army veteran Marty Horn and his wife, Sue, began Any Soldier® Inc. with their son, Brian while he was serving in Iraq, Brian began asking for assistance for care packages for soldiers who never received anything from home. The growth has continued. To date, AnySoldier.com — and its related websites, AnyMarine, AnyAirman, AnySailor, and AnyCoastGuardsman — has served over 1.9 million troops stationed in 22 locations. Any Soldier® has become one of the leading efforts in making sure the men and women who have been deployed for the war are cared for via letters and packages from “home.”

“Throughout this month and next beginning on Veterans Day we will have the link to the Any Soldier site on our website, www.ciancenter.com. Laptop donations can be dropped off at our office at 1803 W. Detweiller Drive in Peoria, and we will take care of getting them to JDS,” said Hope.

Hope said they will have a second drive in July to collect laptops being replaced with new ones by college students for the new school year.

Recently CIAN expanded its capabilities to provide website and email hosting, colocation services, disaster recovery, hosted servers, managed services, and cloud computing through its Tier-2 data center.

The data center is fully redundant to include ECARO-25 fire suppression, multilayer physical security, redundant CRAC and UPS systems, and backup power provided by a robust generator. The facility also houses diverse-path OC48 connectivity from five major carriers.

CIAN has been in business for over 20 years, responding to the technology needs of clients and integrating the newest technologies. Owner of CIAN, Steve Hope, explains this new endeavor by saying, “We began in the early ’90s as technology consultants and quickly became the experts in infrastructure and network support. About 10 years later we added security to our repertoire and became the experts in Incident Response and Information Security. Another 10 years has gone b,y and moving to the cloud seems like a natural evolution for the company.”

NCSA is a nonprofit organization with a mission to educate and empower everyone to use the Internet safely and securely at home, work and school.

National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) is one of NCSA’s key initiatives. NCSA partners with the Department of Homeland Security and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center as a primary driver of the month-long campaign, now in its seventh year. NCSAM is a multifaceted effort to disseminate security messages and information through grassroots, traditional and social media channels. In 2010, NCSA’s efforts alone (not including partner activities) reached an estimated 175,000,000 people through media and other activities.
